The Constitution of the Republic of Palau

The fundamental law of the Republic of Palau sets forth the territory, sovereignty, citizenship and the structure of government in Palau. It provides for Fundamental Rights which include freedom of religion, opinion, expression and the press, the right to petition, right to equal protection under the law, right to property, prohibition against double jeopardy, right to due process and other rights of an accused, freedom of movement, prohibition of torture, cruel, inhumane or degrading punishment, slavery or involuntary servitude, right to examine any government document. It also recognizes traditional law which shall be equally authoritative as statute.
