The Constitution of the People's Republic of Bangladesh
The fundamental law defines Bangladesh as a unitary, independent and sovereign republic to be know as the People's Republic of Bangladesh. It provides for, among others:
- The territory of the Republic
- The state religion
- State language
- National anthem
- Flag and emblem
- The capital
- Citizenship in Bangladesh
It sets forth the fundamental principles of state policy including nationalism, socialism and secularism. It particularly provides that Bangladesh shall be a democracy in which fundamental human rights and freedoms and respect for the dignity and worth of the human person shall be guaranteed, and in which effective participation by the people through their elected representatives in administration at all levels shall be ensured. It provides for fundamental rights including:
- Equality before the law
- Freedom from discrimination
- Equality of opportunity in public employment
- Prohibition of foreign titles
- Right to protection of law
- Right to life and liberty
- Safeguards to arrest and detention
- Prohibition of forced labor
- Rights in relations to trial and punishment
- Freedom of movement, assembly, association, thought and conscience and of speech
- Freedom of profession
- Freedom of religion, Freedom of property
- Protection of home and correspondence
It also provides for the form of government which consists of the Executive, Legislature and the Judiciary.
