The Constitution of Kiribati

The fundamental law of the Kiribati declares, among others, the fundamental rights and freedoms of the individual which include:

  • The right to life, liberty, security of the person and the protection of the law
  • Freedom of conscience, of expression and of assembly and association
  • Protection for the privacy of his home and other property and from deprivation of property without compensation
  • Freedom of movement
  • Protection from discrimination

It specifically vests jurisdiction on the High Court over actions for redress of the contravention of the Bill of Rights. It also defines Kiribati citizenship and the structure of government composed of the Executive, Legislative and Judicial Branches.
