Centre for Human Rights Movement vs. Government of Bangladesh (Writ Petition No. 1212 of 2011)
Petitioners assailed government plans for the construction of a 1,300-MW coal based thermal power station in the vicinity of the Sundarbans, a mangrove forest located adjacent to the Bay of Bengal. The petitioners contend that the power plant would be in violation of the Bangladesh Environment Conservation Act. They further submitted that the Sundarbans is the world’s largest mangrove forest, a listed World Heritage Site, and protected under the Wetlands Act. The court issued a Rule Nisi, calling upon the respondents to show cause as to why an order should not be given restraining respondents from setting up the power station. However, the case has not progressed.
