Building Act 2006 (Kiribati)

The Building Code mandates that all building works must be carried out in accordance with its provisions. The Code requires that a building must be structurally sufficient, safe and stable for its intended use, and not pose a hazard to persons or property. The Code also identifies certain requirements for building works including a building approval, sustainability report, certificate of occupancy prior to use, plans, drawings and specifications kept in the premises, among others. The Code provides that failure to comply with these requirements amounts to offenses punishable with imprisonment and/or fine. The Code also sets out the procedure to secure a building approval, as well as a provision for the enforcement of the Code.
