Biosafety Act of Bhutan 2015

The Act established the National Biosafety Board which is mandated to review and recommend matters concerning the national biosafety policy to the Royal Government, and endorse rules and regulations for the implementation of the Act, among others.

The Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority serves as the national competent authority for the implementation and enforcement of the Act. The Act defines the precautionary principle and enumerates the prohibited activities which include importation, transportation, intentional introduction, use, and research and development of any genetically modified organism (GMO) or material that is capable of reproducing.

All GMO and products derived from GMO for introduction into the Kingdom of Bhutan are required to be subjected to a risk analysis. Approved commercial products derived from GMOs placed in the market shall be labeled and regulated. Importation and export of products derived from GMOs shall likewise be regulated.
