Alternative Renewable Energy Policy 2013 (Bhutan)
The Alternative Renewable Energy Policy was formulated considering the rising energy demand, the reliance on a single electricity source, increasing fossil fuel imports, and low hydropower production in winter months, it is critical to diversify the energy mix by harnessing other domestic sources of clean renewable energy to ensure energy security, economic development, and protection of the environment. The objectives of the Policy include contributing to energy security and broadening the energy portfolio through utilization of available renewable energy potential, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and contribute to climate change mitigation. The Policy thus sets out a preliminary minimum target of 20 MW by 2025 through a mix of renewable energy technologies, using solar, wind and biomass for generation. For this purpose, fiscal incentives are granted to renewable energy projects.
