Act on Mental Health and Welfare for the Mentally Disabled, Act No. 123 of 1950 (Japan)

The Act defined Mentally Disabled as individuals with schizophrenia, acute addiction to or dependency on a psychoactive substance, intellectual disability, psychopathy or any other form of psychiatric disorder. It further provided for the establishment of mental health and welfare centers which provide services relating to dissemination of knowledge, and conducting research on mental health and the welfare of the Mentally Disabled, among others. It also required the designation of physicians specializing on mental health. 

The Act also provided the rules and regulations applicable to the medical treatment and protection of the Mentally Disabled, and their hospitalization for medical care and protection.
