1994 United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in Those Countries Experiencing Serious Drought and/or Desertification, Particularly in Africa

The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) seeks to combat desertification and mitigate the impact of drought in countries where serious drought and desertification occur, particularly in Africa. The UNCCD notes the contribution of combating desertification can make to achieving the objectives of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The parties to the UNCCD are obliged to establish relevant national action programs, strategies and priorities while being conscious of the principles of sustainable development and the context of poverty alleviation. In the same vein, developed country parties should combat desertification and mitigate the effects of drought, as well as undertake to provide substantial financial resources and other forms of support as assistance to developing countries affected. The UNCCD utilizes an integrated approach, with support from international cooperation and partnership arrangements, and deals with the process of desertification as a whole, including its physical, biological and socioeconomic aspects.
