Hanim Kamaruddin
Senior Lecturer
Dr. Hanim Kamaruddin is currently serving as the Deputy Dean (Academic Affairs) and a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. She received LLB (Hons) degree from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in which she wrote a final year thesis on the effectiveness of Environmental Impact Assessment from a legal standpoint in Malaysia.
In 1996, she was called to the Malaysian Bar as a qualified Advocate and Solicitor of Malaya. She further obtained a Master’s degree in the legal aspects of marine affairs at University of Wales in Cardiff in 1997 where she wrote a thesis on management of Straits of Malacca from Malaysia’s legal aspect. She obtained her PhD degree in Law from University of Malaya (UM) focusing on research in the legal aspects of transboundary haze pollution in Malaysia. She teaches Environmental Law, International Environmental Law, Torts and Remedies.
Her research focuses on environmental law on transboundary haze pollution and plastic waste pollution in Malaysia. She has published law articles, chapters in books, international conference proceedings on issues related to environmental law. Dr Hanim is an active member in the Disciplinary Board of Bar Council Malaysia, a certified mediator, and Malaysia’s Country Focal Person for Asian Development Bank (ADB) Strengthening Environmental Law-Train the Trainers (TTT) Program.
She was the National Director for Malaysia’s TTT Program in 2016 and also for Strengthening Environmental Law: Train the Judges Program in 2017 jointly organized by ADB. In 2020, she was the lead expert in drafting the Transboundary Haze Pollution Bill commissioned by the Ministry of Environment and Water in Malaysia. She has published a book entitled “The Environmental Quality Act (EQA) 1974 Statutory Instruments and Amendments” in 2016. She is also a Visiting Professor at Faculty of Law, Hasanuddin University, Indonesia.
